About

The PREVIA Project "Preparation and Resistance to Eruptions of Ibero-American Volcanoes" is an R+D+i Project, financed by the FEDER Andalusia Operational Program -2020 call-, reference A-FQM-106-UGR20.

Led by Dr. Jane H. Scarrow, lecturer in the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, University of Granada, this project combines innovative techniques from the natural and social sciences to analyse the problem: How can society become more resilient in the face of volcanic risks and hazards? The aim, using applied research, is to eliminate barriers between society and science.

We take a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to focus on volcanic eruptions. The main objective is to build social capacity and increase resilience to possible volcanic risk scenarios. The project comprises: geochronology and petrology, geophysics, archaeology and history, psychology, economics, law and education sciences.

Each area has a specific objective with the numerous research lines and methodologies aligned to generate synergies between the different disciplines, as shown, for example, in Figure 1.

The field work was undertaken in Managua, capital of Nicaragua, with communities living near Apoyeque volcano which last erupted ca 2,000 years ago and is considered dormant with the possibility of future activity.

By integrating results obtained from the different disciplines we plan to develop an action plan for vulnerable urban centres.
