Psychology

Societal perception of risk and evaluation of the needs.

Psychology - needs of affected people, using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to define cultural norms and expected reactions, as well as foreseeable responses to danger and threat.

The Sendai action framework guidelines indicate societal participation and commitment is necessary for disaster risk reduction. A comprehensive approach to involving communities requires evaluation and feedback about understanding of risk, perceived needs and capabilities, and expected responses and behaviors. The perception of risk of local communities and agencies determines the trust that can be established with the authorities and interpretation of volcanic risk factors. Evaluation and monitoring of attitudes of the local population and other relevant social actors is therefore a key factor in building resilience and, in general, facilitating decision-making.

Informing populations about their exposure to risk increases adoption of protection measures, reduces potential damage in the event of a disaster, and contributes to better societal risk management.
