Installation and maintenance of a network of seismometers - detection of volcanic earthquakes.

The specific objective of the project, in the Geophysics area, is to install geophysical monitoring networks, as an early warning system, to detect signs of volcanic activity.

One of the main aims of volcanic seismology, and of vulcanology in general, it is the identification of the relationships and causes of volcanic earthquakes and volcano reactivation processes. There is particular interest in the seismic community about associating the different types of seismic-volcanic signals with models of seismic sources, in order to better understand i. the physical processes driving earthquakes and ii. their relationship with volcanic dynamics. In recent years, computational techniques have advanced enormously, by combining the flexibility of Bayesian models to interpret uncertainties associated with data analysis, and artificial intelligence.

Our team is a pioneer in the use of new algorithms to determine the parameters or characteristics of seismic-volcanic signals, time series of which serves as a reference for changes in the state of volcanic activity. This project aims to study such changes, to associate them with evolution of the volcanic system, differentiating between an isolated individual change, or a collective change that could reflect the future behavior of the volcanic system and therefore be used for prediction.
